Not for the first time, reports suggest that this year is where we will see the successor to the Nintendo Switch. According to Omdia analyst Hiroshi Haise, the next-gen consoles will have an 8-inch LCD screen rather than OLED as standard. Haise's research focuses on small and medium-sized displays, with annual forecasts based on tests with companies in the supply chain, writes Bloomberg . Nintendo "will be responsible for a doubling of so-called entertainment shipments by 2024," the analyst claims. Reports suggest that the Switch 2 will have an 8-inch LCD line with Sharp taking over in May 2023, which will produce LCDs for new gaming consoles.
Sharp CEO Fax Lists Robert Wu said his company has been working closely with an undisclosed company on the development of the game console since it was in the R&D stage. Exclusive: Nintendo will launch next-generation game consoles with 8-inch LCDs, boosting demand for display panels by 14.6 million units, Omdia says. t.co/7SnKeoZOtU — Takashi Mochizuki (@6d6f636869) Salt January 26, 2024 Sharp has worked with Nintendo in the past, including providing LCDs for DS consoles and helping assemble the Switch. The standard Switch screen measures 6.2 inches, while the OLED option is 7 inches.
With an 8-inch screen, the Switch 2's display will be larger than that of the Steam Deck, ROG Ally, and most other handhelds, except for the Legion Go , which has an 8.8-inch display. Earlier this month, it was reported that hundreds of developers are currently working on Switch 2 games , further pointing to a 2024 launch. A more precise release window isn't known, but don't be surprised if the new console drops somewhere around the holiday season. Nintendo's choice of an LCD rather than an OLED screen will likely disappoint some gamers, but it means the Switch 2 will be cheaper at a time when people are still being conservative with their spending. And like the current Switch, there will definitely be an OLED version in the future.
