Let's start from a necessary premise: no book on writing will ever be able to transform a terrible paper-wrister into a great writer. There is, however, ample room for improvement in the style of each of us. The advice and testimonies of writing professionals, if interpreted and followed in the right way, can help us avoid the most common mistakes, understand rules and conventions that we will be free to respect or transgress, but only after having known them thoroughly. What I propose is a list of some of the books on writing that I recommend you read. I deliberately omitted those writing coach -style manuals that promised to reveal the secrets to guaranteed success, with tones similar to those used by those accustomed to taking advantage of the naivety of others. For each of them I will indicate, in all honesty, what I appreciated and what left me perplexed.
Elements of style in writing Publisher: Dino Audino Author: William Strunk Jr (additions by Mirko Sabatino) Translator: Stefania Rossi Elements of style in writingA handbook inherent to the narrative style, written almost a century ago and integrated over the years. For many it is the definitive manual for aspiring writers. I'm not so convinced, despite the Phone Number Data excellent appendices aimed at making the book accessible to Italian readers. This is certainly a very useful handbook in order to avoid missteps in punctuation, point of view and verbal forms. It manages to deal with all the main problems related to narration, albeit very briefly. It is precisely the schematic nature that constitutes the greatest merit and greatest flaw of this text, which I recommend especially to those who have already carried out studies and want excellent "notes" to consult in times of need.
Creative writing cookbook Authors: Stefano Brugnolo and Giulio Mozzi Publisher: Zanichelli Creative writing cookbookAlthough I have always had a strong prejudice for the adjective "creative" associated with writing, I really appreciated this book, which has the honest claim of not being mistaken for a manual. The exercises proposed, with simplicity and irony, concern all-round writing. The book is full of ideas and exercises, aimed in my opinion at developing that "muscle" of creativity which often needs to be left free from pressure to express itself at its best. I think it is a good resource for those who want to work hard and are willing to carry out the "tasks" that are proposed. The large space dedicated to different forms of writing could turn up the nose of those looking for a text focused on prose.
